Textbook Joel David Hamkins, Proof and the Art of Mathematics, MIT Press (2020)

Course Description Formal introduction to the concepts of logic, finite and infinite sets, functions, methods of proof and axiomatic systems. Learning mathematical expressions in writing is an integral part of the course.

Prerequisite Math 243 (or concurrent) or 253A (or concurrent) or consent.

Grading Policy

The break-down for your grade is as follows:

25% Final exam
25% Midterm
25% In-class work
25% Homework

A key goal of this class is to teach you how to write mathematics. A portion of the in-class work and homework will be writing assignments. For these assignments, you will have the opportunity to rewrite your work in response to feedback from me and your peers. Students must adequately complete all writing assignments to pass the course with a ‘D’ or better. Students who do not complete all writing assignments will get a D- or an F and will not earn W Focus credit.

Grades will be assigned based upon the standard F to A scale. I do not anticipate this happening, but I reserve the right to later move the intervals downward if I decide a curve is necessary.

Class Structure

Class will be held virtually via Zoom. Information on how to connect can be found on the Laulima site and the Discord for the class.

The weekly structure of the class will be as follows. Mondays and Wednesdays will be used for lecture while Friday will be used for in-class group work. Homework for the week will be due by 11:55pm Sundays.

Attendance Policy

It is important that you attend class and participate, for that is a key part of how you will learn the material for this course. A portion of your overall grade for the class will be based on your participation in in-class group work.

Exams

There will be one midterm and one final exam. The tentative structure for the exams is that each exam will have a written part and an oral part. For the written part, I will assign you a selection of problems to complete at home, with approximately one week given. For the oral part, I will meet with you individually via Zoom for you to present one of the problems from the written part.

Homework

Weekly homework will be posted on the main webpage for this course. You are strongly encouraged to use LaTeX, the premier program for typesetting mathematics, to typeset your homework.

Academic Honesty

Cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty are not tolerated. This holds for every class, but I want to especially emphasize it here. This class is the gateway to most upper division mathematics classes, and what you learn here forms the basis of what you will do in those classes. If you cheat here it will only come back to hurt you in future classes.
